Shooting an event like the Travis Manion Heroes Run involves a lot of emotion. People show up to this event not only to support a good cause, but to run the race for their own personal battles.

I have multiple goals when it comes to photographing an event that includes such sentiment. To start, I wanted to capture as much emotion as possible. Primarily, I would search for people’s smiles as they cross the finish line. In doing so I captured hugs, high fives, and raised fists. Secondly, and most importantly, I wanted my photos to tell a story. Specifically, I wanted to capture how this race is a manifestation of triumph over hard times. Every person there had a reason they were running, and as I captured people’s reasons, my photos began to tell that narrative.

Each year, the event, 9/11 Heroes Run, take place on or around September 11, uniting thousands of runners, walkers, ruckers, and volunteers in communities across the country. On Oct. 5, 2025, in Bucks County, the Travis Manion Foundation honored the first responders who gave their lives on September 11, 2001, and the service members who stepped up to serve in the wars that followed.
