What was Delval like in 2025? A Capstone Class Unveils DelVal’s 1925 History

In the list of Capstone classes students can take at the University, there is one called Intro. to Museums: Hist & Prac. This class focuses on museums and explores how they work and function. Professor Stutman, who teaches the class, has an overall goal—one part being to develop a general understanding of how museums operate. The other part of the goal is for students, by the end of the semester, to create a display showcasing DelVal’s history from a hundred years ago. This year, the class focused on 1925 and all aspects of the school at that time.

The class split into groups to explore different elements of 1925. The groups included the library, sports, school life, and architecture. Each group worked for weeks to research their respective topics. In the second half of the semester, the class spent time in the basement of the library, working with librarian Marian Schad and Professor Stutman to gather information and resources about DelVal in 1925.

The display materials were created in the library or sourced from its vault. A few days before the exhibit’s main unveiling, the groups installed their projects in the display case on the second floor of the Life Sciences Building. On the day of the main viewing—either Day of Scholars or Founders Day—students stood by their displays, presenting their work and speaking with visitors. The projects will remain in the display case until the end of the school year so that more people can appreciate the class’s hard work.
