“Things like this just bring people together and flowers are just one of those things where every can just stop, look and appreciate.”

Those of the words of a Delaware Valley University student taking in the beauty of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Five Delaware Valley University students seized the opportunity to showcase their school with a display at the Philadelphia Flower Show, deemed as the best overall event in the world by the International Festivals and Events Association.

The Philadelphia Flower Show, an annual celebration initiated in 1829 by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, continues to flourish. Beyond the typical expectations of a flower show, it bursts with creativity, featuring art, clothing, vehicles crafted from flowers, and numerous vendors offering dozens of unique items.

“Our thoughts going into it were how could we maximize the amount of space we have to be able to get the most produced, cost effectiveness out of it, anything you could think of just to be able maximize whatever you want out of your garden and your space,” said Jacob Renege.

And achieve they did.

The Delaware Valley University students constructed a display resembling a house, with one section depicting the interior of a kitchen and the other a fenced backyard brimming with produce. Aligning with this year’s theme, “United in Flowers,” DelVal aimed to highlight the gardens beyond their aesthetic appeal, emphasizing their essential role in sustaining life on Earth. For their exhibit, they drew inspiration from North Philadelphia’s unique charm, characterized by overgrown plants in dilapidated buildings, to showcase how plants reveal beauty.

“Inspired by North Philly’s compact residential plots and vibrant characters, our garden offers nutritious foods, medicines, ecosystem biodiversity, economic benefits, and beauty,” shared Delaware Valley University’s Instagram.
