Big Man On Campus! Delaware Valley University Welcomes ‘Roll With Joe’ to the Breeding Center

Roll With Joe has joined the Delaware Valley University Breeding Center to partake in the breeding program.

Roll With Joe is a 2008 Standardbred Stallion who has earned $1.8 million on the race track. He originates from Blue Chip Farm who has been a wonderful partner to Delaware Valley University, and is owned by the Roll With Joe Syndicate. In 2011 he earned the title “Dan Patch 3-Year Old Pacing Colt of the Year.”

Jenna Riegle, Delaware Valley’s Breeding Center Manager is especially excited about welcoming him into DelVal’s program.

“It’s been really great having the opportunity for the students to see the industry standard.” Says Riegle. “He was an amazing racehorse.”

For students like Calista Dinges, an Equine Science major specializing in Breeding, Joe’s presence on campus has impacted her learning experience as well as future career.

“He has given me the confidence I need to continue to handle all stallions and has taught me more about patience than I already do,” said Dinges. “It’s nice to work with a “new” or different stallion at the Breeding Center to give me more handling experience both in class and at work.”

Dinges is involved in three different classes that are involved with the Breeding Center, Horse Breeding Management, Yearling Horse Sales, and Advanced Equine Reproduction. She is also a member of the Breeding Center staff.

Delaware Valley students involved with the Breeding Center through class or as staff have the opportunity to see just how horse breeding functions.

“We really run the Breeding Center like an industry facility that’s breeding outside mares and shipping semen regularly,” Riegle said.

Students are in charge of semen collections and shipping on the breeding side, and help prepare foals and yearlings for the yearling sale in November on the foal side of the industry.

While DelVal is also home to three other stallions, two Standardbreds and a Warmblood, none have reached the level of fame as Roll With Joe has as their offspring have yet to reach the race track.

Roll With Joe currently has sired over $46 million in earnings. Of his offspring, his daughter, Twin B Joe Fresh has earned $1.4 million and his son,  Racing Hill, has earned $1.7 million on the race track. Delaware Valley University is proud to be the home of his 2017 filly Roll With Joy who has just welcomed her first colt this year.

It was one of Riegle’s goals for the Breeding Program to have a proven stallion, one who has recorded earnings, for the experience of the students. It’s an investment. “The mare has to get in foal, the foal has to be born, the foal sells, the foal goes into training, and then starts racing. That’s like a 4-year turn around. It takes a while for a stallion to prove himself. So, it’s neat to have Joe, who has already proven himself.”

Excitably, Flashbacks and Swift As a Shadow, who also stand as stallions at Delaware Valley University will be proving themselves soon as their colts will be hitting the racetrack this year as two-year-olds.

Roll With Joe will be staying on campus for the rest of his career as a breeding stallion. Del Val is excited to see the continuation of his partnership with us as Dinges said:

“It is an honor and privilege to have the ability to work with Joe every day.”
