As the spring semester begins, students are getting back into the swing of things by attending their various club meetings. For some clubs, this is the first time they will be meeting as they are a new club on campus. One of the new clubs this semester is Colleges Against Cancer, a club focused on raising awareness for cancer.
Samantha Wilton, a freshman at Delaware Valley University is serving as the president of Colleges Against Cancer. When Wilton found out that DelVal did not have a club dedicated to this cause, she knew she needed to create one.
“I have participated in Relay for Life since middle school all the way up until my senior year of high school,” said Wilton. “It’s such a great cause and it has been a part of my life for so long that I wanted to continue participating in it as a college student.”
Wilton and the club will focus on raising money for the American Cancer Society through various fundraisers and events. Throughout the semester, the club plans on holding fundraisers at least once a month, all the money made from the fundraisers will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Some of their fundraisers will include a lollipop sale, a slip and slide, and a Crumbl Cookie fundraiser.
Another aspect of this club will revolve around the Relay for Life events. Relay for Life is a fundraising walk that is dedicated to celebrating cancer survivors and honoring loved ones who passed. Members of the club will form teams and get the opportunity to raise money together.
“This is a way for students to be a part of something bigger than themselves and truly help people while having fun,” said Wilton.
The Colleges Against Cancer club will plan to meet once or twice a month on Wednesdays. While they do not have set dates yet, you can check out their Instagram @cacdelval for information regarding upcoming meetings.
