Juggling Courtside and Newsroom: A Day in the Life of a Student Athlete and Multimedia Reporter

As the final buzzer echoes through the gym signaling the end of another intense basketball game, I quickly shift gears from athlete to multimedia reporter. Although I am on the court as a player, I am wishing I was courtside with my Canon camera in hand, kneeling on the outside of those four lines capturing the intensity of the star player when he drains a half-court shot sending the game into overtime.

Being a multimedia reporter I never just see things or moments for what they are, I make strong efforts to dig deeper and expose the hidden gems that may have been overlooked. My name is Joshua Pierre, and I’m not your typical senior student. Balancing the rigorous life of a student athlete at Delaware Valley University with my role as a media and communications major specializing in multimedia reporting has been both a challenging and immensely rewarding journey.

The Double Life: Athlete and Reporter

Delving into the world of journalism, photography, videography, and reporting while also excelling on the basketball court has undoubtedly been a demanding task.

The early mornings, the late-night editing sessions, and the constant balancing act have become my norm. But hey, who said college life was supposed to be easy?

As a senior student athlete, my days are a whirlwind of classes, practice sessions, and game days. However, being a multimedia reporter for the media program at Delaware Valley University has added another layer to my already bustling life. It’s not unusual to find me trading my basketball sneakers for a camera, capturing the raw emotion of the game or conducting interviews with fellow athletes.

Challenges in the Fast Lane

One of the significant challenges I’ve faced is time management. Every minute counts, whether it’s squeezing in a quick editing session before practice or drafting an article during a road trip. It’s a constant battle to ensure that neither my athletic performance nor my academic and journalistic pursuits suffer.

Moreover, staying updated with the latest media trends and technologies while keeping my basketball skills sharp requires a delicate dance. The fast-paced nature of both fields demands adaptability and resilience.

Impact on and off the Court

Despite the challenges, the impact of being a multimedia reporter has been profound. The skills I’ve honed in the newsroom have not only enhanced my storytelling abilities but have also translated to improved communication on the court. The discipline required for meticulous reporting has seamlessly integrated into my athletic endeavors, making me a more focused and detail-oriented player.

Beyond personal growth, being a multimedia reporter has allowed me to give a voice to the athletic community at Delaware Valley University. Through my lens, I’ve captured moments that transcend the final score — the camaraderie, the dedication, and the untold stories of my fellow student athletes.

Benefits: A Winning Combination

The benefits of this dual life are not one-sided. While my athletic journey has instilled in me the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, my journalistic pursuits have refined my storytelling skills and provided a platform to share the narratives that often go unnoticed. The synergy between these two facets of my college experience has made me a more well-rounded individual.

Looking Ahead

As I stand on the brink of graduation, reflecting on the whirlwind of the past few years, I am grateful for the unique path I’ve carved. Balancing the roles of a senior student athlete and multimedia reporter has not only presented challenges but has also equipped me with a diverse skill set that will undoubtedly serve me well in my future endeavors.

Whether I’m sinking a three-pointer on the court or capturing the essence of a game through my lens, I know that this experience is shaping not only my college years but also my professional trajectory. So here’s to the late nights, the early mornings, and the countless hours spent perfecting my craft — a testament to the resilience of a student athlete navigating the realms of both sports and journalism.
